What to Know About Lash Extensions and Water

Published on 4-18-2022

When you get lash extensions, there are a few key things that you can do to ensure that they look their best and last their longest. When discussing extension maintenance, there is this misconception that water and extensions don't mix. Is this true? What should you know about showers, hot tubs, and pools when it comes to lash extensions? Let us fill you in.

When You Should Avoid Water

Should you avoid water altogether when you have eyelash extensions? Absolutely not! You can still enjoy showers, relaxing baths, and pool days without sacrificing the integrity of your lashes. But there is one instance when you definitely should avoid water, and that is right after application. After your extension appointment, you want to give the lash adhesive enough time to cure properly and dry fully. This takes anywhere from 24-48 hours. In the first 24 hours, you DO want to avoid water, creams, cleansers or any type of products. Let your lashes be! After that 48-hour window, however, you are free to do as you please!

With that being said, we do have a few tips for you to keep in mind when it comes to extensions and showers. If you keep these tips in the back of your mind, your lashes will stay where they belong for as long as possible.

Don’t Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

The less you mess with your lashes, the better. That's why we recommend that you avoid rubbing or scrubbing your eyelashes when showering (or anytime). The bonding adhesive we use at Lashology is extremely strong medical grade, which means that your lashes shouldn't budge under normal circumstances. But introducing extra friction to your lash line can compromise that bond.

Choose Gentle Shower Settings

While we are talking about avoiding friction, let’s talk about water pressure. Some people really enjoy strong shower settings, but if possible, switch your shower head to a gentle setting to avoid agitating your lashes too much, or keep your eyes away from that direct pressure.

Assess Your Bath Products

You might be surprised to know that many bathroom products contain oil and alcohol. These two ingredients can quickly break down the bond of your lashes. Don’t let a soap or face wash destroy your extensions! Take the time to read the ingredients of the different products in your shower and confirm that they are lash friendly.

Avoid Excessively Hot Showers, Baths, or Steam Rooms

High heat will break down the bond of the glue and lead to premature fallout.

Swimming in Pools or the Ocean

You can absolutely swim in the pool with your extensions, however, give your lashes that full 48 hours to cure before doing so. The ocean, on the other hand, is not extension friendly. The salt is even harder on the bond of the glue than oil-based products. Salt absorbs moisture that is used to set the glue in the first place. Too much time in saltwater disintegrates the glue!

Don’t Forget to Brush

Once you towel off, don’t forget to brush out your lashes. Always make sure to use a clean lash wand to brush. Brushing your lashes will make sure that they remain fluffy and in place.
